Make sure that the light in which you apply your make-up, natural or artificial, falls directly onto your face, not behind you or onto one side. Try to use daylight for day and a direct light for night- no need for anything fancy, I just take the shade off a lamp-easy!
A basic brush selection will help you get the best from your make-up and help you to achieve a professional finish.
So, even if you need more than light coverage, as many of us do, apply with a delicate hand and blend extra base or concealer where you need it, not necessarily all over.
A lightweight translucent loose face powder is an essential in every make-up artist's kit, not just to hold make-up in place, but imperceptibly to even out skin texture and to make it appear smooth and poreless.
A tricky one, I know, but remember that what looked right for you at 20 might need updating at 30. Very often you can keep the essence of the look you like and just alter the shades and application. For example, dramatic, hard-edged black eyeliner could be replaced by a rich brown or charcoal grey with the edges softened.
Group all your products together- foundations in one group, eye make-up in another and so on. Be ruthless-throw away anything dried up or dirty and clean up everything that you are keeping.
Whether you are using a powder or cream blush, a light hand is essential. Remember, you can always build the colour gradually by adding more rather than trying to take it off.
Layering is a great way to build up volume, so if you are applying several coats, comb through your lashes with a lash comb in between each coat to ensure your lashes remain separated for maximum impact.
If you are unsure of which colour goes with another, choose a different tone of the same shade ie a medium shade on your lid, a darker version for shaping and a toning highlighter.
When you are shaping your eyebrows, alternate between them so the two shapes are the same- looking from one to the other helps keep the balance.
Even if you're a 'gloss-only' girl, you can add intensity to your lips by not only outlining but also filling in your lips with a lip pencil before topping off with your favourite gloss.
A clear nail polish will double-up as both a base coat and a top coat as well as protecting your nails from staining. It will also extend the life of your polish.
